Obama pardoned more turkeys than people in 2014

On November 26, 2014, President Barack Obama has carried out the annual White House tradition by pardoning two turkeys. He extended the executive clemency to Mac and Cheese – two lucky birds that will now live out the remainder of their days on a farm in Virginia, instead of becoming Thanksgiving dinner.

President Obama referred to this tradition as "puzzling." Perhaps even more puzzling is the fact that in 2014, he pardoned more turkeys than people. The only other clemency extended by President Obama this year was the commutation of the sentence of a prisoner who was serving an additional term of three-and-a-half years in prison because of a clerical error. Ceasar Cantu, a convicted drug dealer from Katy, Texas, was sentenced at the wrong level of the sentencing guidelines. Instead of a mandatory 11-and-a-half year sentence, he was facing 15 years behind bars.
