In August 2015, Office of Inspector General (OIG) released “Management Advisory on Department of Homeland Security Components’ Reporting of Conference Spending.” This report reveals that the DHS had blown an astonishing $20.3 million of taxpayers’ funds in just one year on hosting and attending conferences. It should be noted that according to the OIG report, the DHS failed to report all of the conferences in contravention to their obligations to do so. Pedro Nel Moreno-Romero, 51, was removed from the United States on November 24, 2014 by the Department of Homeland Security’s Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) officers in Miami, Florida. Moreno-Romero was convicted of aggravated murder in 2013 in Colombia and sentenced to 35 years imprisonment. He murdered a friend, then dismembered the body with a machete and discarded the remains in a plastic bag. Moreno-Romero had been on the run since 2007. He fled Colombia the next day after committing the murder and illegally entered the United States at or near Hidalgo, Texas, in August 2007. He’s been living in the U.S. undetected for seven years. Moreno-Romero was finally apprehended and ordered removed by an immigration judge in May 2014. His subsequent appeal to the Board of Immigration Appeals was denied in October 2014. Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General recently released the second part of its semiannual report to Congress . In response to OIG’s investigations, the DHS declined to prosecute 111 cases, accepted 56 investigations for prosecution and achieved 56 convictions. OIG audits resulted in questioned costs of $59,424,677, of which $2,679,489 did not have supporting documentation. As a result of disallowed costs, the DHS recovered or de-obligated $32,743,847. OIG issued 14 reports, identifying $898,468,917 in funds that could be put to better use by the DHS. OIG determined that the Department of Homeland Security cannot ensure it has sufficient personal protective equipment and antiviral medical countermeasures for a pandemic response. On October 14, 2014 Romeo Mihov Ruskov, 48 was deported from the U.S. back to his native Bulgaria by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE). Ruskov brutally raped a minor in Bulgaria in 1993, illegally entered the U.S. in 1995 and managed to hide from justice for nearly two decades. His case exemplifies the inexcusable shortcomings of our lax immigration system. Ruskov was removed from Chicago via commercial aircraft, arriving in Sofia, Bulgaria on Oct. 15, 2014. He is the subject of an Interpol Red Notice (an arrest warrant or court order issued by the judicial authorities in the country concerned). Ruskov was convicted for gang raping a minor in Bulgaria, using threats and force. For this heinous crime, Ruskov was sentenced to four years in prison. An appellate decision issued by the Bulgarian Pazardzhik District Court on Nov. 8, 2012 upheld the conviction and sentence. On October 7, 2014 Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced that Operation Predator app is now available for Android smartphones . It’s also available in Spanish for both Apple and Android versions. The Spanish language versions of the app are built-in to the iOS and Android applications. Users who already have the iOS version should update the app or download it fresh from the Apple Store or iTunes. The award-winning Operation Predator app is the first U.S. federal law enforcement app, designed to seek the public's help with fugitive and suspected child predators. It allows users to receive alerts about child predators, share the information via email and social media tools and provide information to ICE's Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) by calling or submitting an online tip. A U.S. immigration officer was sentenced on October 3, 2014 to two and a half years in federal prison, for accepting bribes in the form of cash and egg rolls from applicants seeking citizenship and green cards. Mai Nhu Nguyen, 48, served with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in Santa Ana for eight years. She pleaded guilty to receiving bribes as a public official between July 2011 and May 2013. As an immigration service officer, Nguyen had the authority to approve or deny immigration applications. In one of the instances of bribery, Nguyen called a vendor to order 300 egg rolls. She then told an immigration applicant to pay for the $150 food order and deliver it to her workplace. Once the task was performed, Nguyen proceeded to approve the immigrant's paperwork. The Justice Department announced that aspiring terrorist Hosam Maher Husein Smadi was sentenced to 24 years in prison for trying to blow up a Dallas skyscraper in 2009. He pleaded guilty on May 26, 2010, to one count of attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction. Smadi, who was 19 years old at the time, came to the attention of the FBI through his writings on a radical Islamic website. Special Agent Tom Petrowski, who oversaw the investigation out of the FBI’s Dallas office, said that Smadi “ was on a very extreme website, where people were saying a lot of unspeakable things, endorsing and celebrating acts of violence against U.S. citizens and our allies .” Petrowski added, “ What made Smadi’s postings stand out from the other rhetoric was that he was saying, ‘I want to act.’ That’s what really got our attention.
